Dear NY Big Game,
The 2008 deer harvest numbers are now available. See www.dec.ny.gov/press/52340.html to read the press release announcing the harvest, and www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/42232.html for the harvest tables.
With the harvest numbers announced only yesterday, we have already been asked by several writers and hunters about what to expect for Deer Management Permit allocations next fall. At this point it is too early to make any predictions. Winter conditions this year have been pretty rough through much of the state, and if we get some late winter storms or deep snows and cold temperatures persisting through March, then deer populations in some parts of the state could take a hit. We will be monitoring winter's impact and analyzing deer population trends unit by unit over the coming months.
The press release announcing the 2008 bear harvest should be available in a day or two, and I will forward that link when it is ready.
