As much as I love deer hunting and watching deer, I would have to say, leave them alone. Most guys want a trophy but I'd say 85% percent want to earn it, not pay for it. Is it really worth that 15%?
Disclaimer: My numbers are guestimates and by no means have I done any research on my statements so this is strictly my opinion.

Well I second that opinion!!!! I would love to have such a trophy as a white buck but the only way I would take it is if it was fair chase!!! It's the ONLY way to hunt!!

This is becoming a interesting story. For Seneca County this plan would be a major plus. It actually would be a plus for the deer heard there because at current they are not managed.
The D&C is about as liberal as it comes when reporting. The D&C also very much does not like hunting.
The Sessler plan is a interesting one and I have been following the Seneca County board meetings on this. I actually have to say from a business standpoint this is a great idea and I commend the Sessler's for coming up with the idea.
Here are some facts.
The HSUS has already jumped on the bandwagon to call this a canned hunt. This is by far a canned hunt. It is a fenced area but it is also 16 miles in coverage. There is no way 16 miles of area is a canned hunt or a fenced in operation. In technicality yes because a fence exist, reality its not. Those deer can easily avoid humans. The HSUS though with its agenda knows the hot buttons and this is a tactic to defeat this. Heck the HSUS knows that even hunters do not like canned hunts so this is what they are calling this.
The US Army used to manage this herd to keep it healthy, since the departure of the US Army this is not a regular occourance. And while the US Army did a decent job of managing the herd it is not possible a government agency like that could manage it effectively. The US Army is in the business to fight and protect our country, not deer. Much like many private ranches or the like they are managed by QDM. QDM is by far the best for a deer herd. The habitat would actually be managed, food plots and the like....The Sesslers have already come forward at the board meetings and noted they would manage the property.
Seneca County - This is a win win for this county. Actually a win win could be had for surrounding counties as well as a increased tourist destination if Wayne, Yates, Ontario could postition this well and capitalize. But for Seneca county this is a slam dunk. Seneca county is a large county and a very poor county. Why is it so poor? Because the US Army a major employer and contributor has left plus 10 years ago. Seneca County has had a very hard time much like the rest of Upstate NY to attract jobs and bring forth new. This is a opportunity to take land that is not billing on the tax rolls and put it back on, it would also for sure create at least a handful of jobs.
This herd should never be completely open to the general hunting population. It would ruin what has become a interesting one of a kind thing in this county. No where else is there a herd of white deer like this in the country. Open this to the general populas and bam it's over, it would be a slaughter eventually. Mostly because it would not be managed well.
Which means it needs to be managed. That leaves two options - The DEC could map it a WMU and manage the permit selection process, etc... or a private company. The private company option seems like a win win. Honestly....I wish I had come up with the idea myself. The DEC managing this though coulld work well, it would just elimate benefit to Seneca county with new revenue.

Exactly this is an old army base and by no means a canned hunt high fence operation. The area the fence encompasses is bigger than most people's hunting area and actually bigger than most deer's core habitat.

Furthermore .... to who would manage this.... If the DEC bought and managed this it will not be on the tax rolls. And another thing I thought of is if the DEC did make this a WMU poaching would still happen. It happens countless times in a deer season in NY with tag swapping not only for Doe tags but bucks as well. The DEC does not have the manpower to stop poaching to any real degree. But if this is a private owed operation you bet they would pay taxes and you bet they would not allow poaching.
Just a couple other thought that came to my mind. Jon

im glad this is generating responses.i believe what buckshot john has said is so true.the fact the "humane society is involved got me riled up they are scammers who are totally anti hunting.theres talk they may allow peta to come under their "umrella".16 miles is a lot of space if the DEC took it over it would be a boon to everyone involved cept maybe the deer ;D.as a person who has no property and no access to private property im forced to hunt DEC land all the time.I would take the drive and stay in town.go to dinner etc for a week long hunting trip.Part of the fun of hunting for me is going to new spots and meeting new people.i think they should definately buy the land and open it to hunting again
