I hunted a property saturday that I had never hunted before. Real thick, wet and in an area close to lots of corn and apples. I got to the stand before sunrise, jumping three deer on the way in. They were all bedded in a large goldenrod field, and it was frosty and loud walking in. Late in the morning I had a nice 4 pointer walk by, nose to the ground, looking for a girlfriend. I'm still trying to resist them yearlings, I want to see him next year! I changed stands in the afternoon, but the stand I went to was missing a step at the top and chose to hunt from the ground rather than risk breaking my neck. After a while I heard a tremendous crashing of the brush. I prayed to God and asked to merely see this deer. No sooner than I open my eyes and the buck took a few more steps and was visible to me. A wallhanger for sure, wide heavy 8 pointer. He stopped before clearing the thick stuff, I could make out his head, but he hung up just short of the clearing. If he had continued, I would have had a 20-25 yard shot as he walked from my left to right. He reversed direction, and slowly disappeared. Man, if it was gun season I would have had a shot. I left the woods at dark, 12 hours of hunting, no cellphone, etc...nice. The does must have been hunkered down, hiding from all the serial rapists, I didn't see a single one.
