Gang, Any secrets for the late season? I will be up the last three days of season with the bow, probably the latest I have ever hunted, thinking of hunting trails leading to our winter wheat field? Help! We have seen plenty of deer and one big buck still roaming around.

The secret is and dont tell anyone......Go out in the woods , take your bow , and shoot a deer...LOL
Hunt the food .....
If it is cold, try mid day.....deer seem to move when it warms up a little....
Practice shooting the bow with heavy clothes..dont ask me how I know.
And the best tip of all, use a muzzleloader.
Good luck

I'm with Contender on the best tip of all. I hunted the last 2 years in the late season with my bow and all I had were frozen fingers. Get a Muzzleloader, it doesn't even have to be an expensive one if you can. I bought one for Christmas last year and will be out with it this year for the first time. I can't wait. Good Luck and watch those food sources for sure.

Guys, Well I was going to put a post up if I should go out and buy a muzzle loader? Well I am on my way. I don't know if I should buy it from cabala's or not? Will they ship to me in NY? Does thingy's or Sports Authority sell them? Never shot one or loaded one-is it a big deal? If Cabala will ship to me the cheap one probably would be the best. Any thoughts out there? I will be crunched for time to site it in also, can't do it at home will have to shoot it after I hunt with it Friday late morning-maybe not a good idea? HELP!

I would plan a full day at the range to try some different loads and get comfortable with the gun, work up a load that shoots well. You would be better off with the bow rather than using a gun that you havent shot.
Dont know if D*i*c*k'*s still has them . They seem to be carrying less and less every time I go. Gander has them.
You are probably better off hunting with a bow this year and checking out a good ML for next year. Maybe Bubba will chime in here, he is probably the most familiar with Muzzleloaders and can answer any questions you may have. He may even have a good one for sale with the load already figured out.
Take your time and get a nice one and make sure you can shoot well before hitting the woods.
Good luck

Look at CVA for a good inexpensive ML.
Probably an inline .50 cal is your best best bet to get started.
The easiest way to load would be to put (2) 50 grain Triple seven pellets down the barrel followed by a .50 cal CVA Powerbelt bullet cap it with a 209 primer and you are in business.
For about $100 you can get a cheap rig that will give you pie plate accuracy at 100 yards.
I have 7 muzzleloaders both inlines and sidelocks in .45, 50, and 54 calibers and am available to give more help if you want to get into it more in depth.

Thanks Cj and Contender, I am going to wait and buy one when I have more time to get comfortable with the gun. I just hope the big guy isn't out at 50 yards broadside when I have my Bow!!!!! Burt

CJ, I didnt know you were into muzzleloading that much.. that wi;; be nice to know when I have problems...LOL
Nice pics, Looks like you got a nice buck and a rabbit....Oh that's a deer!!! sorry... ;D.....That brought back memories as I spent 3 years hunting in Virginia mostly at Quantico and that pic reminded me of how small most of the deer are down there... I used to come home to ny for the gun season and I thought I was moose hunting with the size difference .....back then, there was truly a deer behind every tree in VA but they were incredibly small.
good luck
