I need a new bow string and cables. Has anyone else changed theirs and if so did you go with a custom job or whatever the store or pro shop sold? Just curious if there is a difference in spending the money on custom strings or just a good name brand from the local pro shop. If anyone uses a custom set, what are you using?

When I have my strings and cables changed last, I went to my local proshop and had them put on what he recommended...Never an issue.

I've heard of Winners Choice before but I have heard alot about BuckNasty strings over on Archery Talk. Was just curious. My local pro shop isn't that "customer friendly" if you know what I mean. It seems to me that they cater to the regulars and look down on the occasional customer or yearly tune up customer.
They did help me out last year when my stabilizer bushing became stripped by calling Hoyt directly while I was there and continued to say "Yeah I need a new bushing for this OLD bow, it like the Intec but older" I told him it was a 2000 or 2002 Ultratec and he insisted it was an Intec even though it has the Ultratec insignia on both sides of the risers. I know he is a local expert and has his own shop in the area for many, many years and I'm sure some of the larger competition is putting a strain on his business but by insulting customers and their equipment isn't a way to gain business or to try and get them to come back and purchase a $600 to $800 barebones bow. I was in a bind the week before archery season last year and am grateful he ordered the bushing and gave it to me for free. I did end up trying to use one of his machinists to help me and that was a disaster. He refused as he needed to get his own stuff ready for the upcoming season, but he gave me another name. I tried to meet with him at the time he specified and he never showed. Finally I found a machine shop by my house and they drilled and tapped it for $25.
So, do I by custom strings elsewhere and ask them to install them, which could be an insult to them, or try doing business with them again and see if it goes better this time? I have been in there 3 times and spent money each time but the service just seems to be lacking any type of sincerity. Sorry to vent my dilemma but I'm having a hard time making this decision and leaning towards Gander Mnt. or Richards ( aka the big D store you cant type here)

I hear ya on the bow shops . We used to have a Bow Shop in Webster on Empire Blvd ---- Sal's .Archery Shop . If you asked him a question , he would act belligerent and treat you like you were stupid . He couldn't understand why archers didn't frequent his shop . Guess what ? Sal went out of business !
Not sure what to tell you about your shop .

It's a shame that people have to be that way. All they are doing is rolling over and giving in to the big boys and I can't believe they wouldn't try to bend over backwards to gain and keep customers. I believe in the little guy but in this case I may have to go to the big guy. It's a tough choice. I'll let you know what I decide.

Well here it is September and I finally broke down and took the bow in to the shop mentioned above. I have been shooting for a few weeks and the string was getting worse so before I got injured I figured I better go. Gander was about $8 to $10 more than the local guy and I thought I should give him one more chance. I'm glad I did. The service was great, and the guys were in joking moods so everything went well. I got a new string and cables and kitty whiskers, my peep and kisser installed, new nock points, and had 6 arrows wrapped and refletched. Cost me $123.57 total with tax. Not a bad deal. Now I need to practice practice practice some more. Hope everyone is doing well and Im looking forward to the upcoming season. Havent seen many deer where I hunt but have seen some minimal sign.

I took my backup bow to the shop where I bought it and had the string and cables replaced . The guy did a great job when I had initially bought the bow a couple years ago . Anyway , the peep was too low and tied in . I got that adjusted . I still have to fix the rest . The shop owner fastened the cord to the cable slide rather than the down cable like I had id fastened . The cable slide isn't near as fast as the down cable plus I need to move the rest up ..........
