My first gun I bought myself was my 870 shotgun and I never owned a .22. I had always wanted one just for fun. I borrowed my father in laws last year and rabbit hunted with it and had a blast. So I was talking with a co worker and said I was going to go look at Gander with my $25 gift card and some cash. He mentioned he had an Ithaca M-49R lever action .22 that was just sitting in his closet. He said it shoots but needs a good cleaning and the shell lifter sticks. He then said he would trade the gun for the $25 gift card.
He brought it into work and I took it home and test fired it today. The lifter does stick but I believe a good cleaning will cure it. If not a replacement is under $3.00. He will be getting the Gander card tomorrow and I finally got my .22. I'd say it was definately a good deal.

I have a few hours to myself tomorrow morning so I am heading out to have some fun. I may try for the bunnies but if not, I have 2 boxes of longs waiting to be shot. ANd you don't have to just remember the past, get out there and live it. I'm 34 and I feel like a little kid. I hope to introduce my daughter to shooting and this will be a nice start for her. She's 5 and is already calling it "her gun". That gets me even more excited and my boy is 3 years behind her so I can do it all over again.

I still have the 1st 22 that I ever bought . When I turned 14 my dad let me buy a gun . I bought a used Marlin 22 lever action Model 39A at Hughes storting Goods Store (long gone) in Dansville , NY for $34 . I've had it for 52 years .

Thats some good stuff right there Ed. For me it has been fun learning about this gun. I bought a schematic for it to see how it all works and am in the process of cleaning it by semi breaking it down. It jammed on me 4 times today so I knew it needed the cleaning. I was trying to go fast with the action as well and that is when it jammed. Slow and steady did the trick and it worked fine. Hoping the cleaning will solve the issue all together. By the way I found a great site for any of you wanting to learn more about the guns you own or if you need parts for them. This is where I got the schematic and parts list and it's actually located in NY. Here is the link: www.e-gunparts.com

Just an update for you and a question for any lever action, tube fed magazine experts out there. The inside cleaned up real nice. I did do a no, no though. I removed the bolt to expose everything and then soaked the inner working with some bore cleaner. I ended up using q-tips to get those hard to reach places best I could but I could still hear grit in the moving parts. Here comes the no, no part. I used my WD-40 to blast that crud out of there and it worked great. Then I cleaned the WD-40 off really good with more bore cleaner and some new stuff I bought called Black Off by Rusty Duck. It's a black powder solvent and it was on sale at Wally World for $3. This stuff is awesome. There was some sticky tape residue on the outside of the gun and I put this stuff on it and poof it was gone.
Well the action is all oiled up now and everything is in working order. I loaded 5 shells into it and everything was good until the 3 one. I am almost thinking that the spring inside the tube magazine is whooped. Do any of you think this could be the problem with the shell not making it out of the magazine all the way into the lifter? If need be, I will take a picture of how it is jamming so I can get your advice. Just let me know. Thanks fellas.

If you think that it is the spring, I would start by replacing it...Shouldn't be too expensive. The plus side is that you are learning this new to you firearm inside and out...

Thx for the advice WNY. It is fun learning about this new to me toy. Went shooting with the neighbor last Saturday and it was still jamming, here and there, more so on the 1st and 2nd rounds and then the rest seemed to come out of the magazine fine. I guess I was expecting perfection for $25 but I know better than that.

That was a good price for it..
It would be worth, to have a gunsmith look at it......
Why go crazy.... It may be just a little thing that is causing the problem....

Yup thats it, all for $25. In mint condition or 95 to 97% this particular model is only worth $100 to $125. Having a gunsmith look at it may cost me more than it is worth but you never know. Plus I'm having fun trying to fix it myself and learning at the same time.

I have my dad's 22 a remington single shot bolt action 522 my mom got him with gold bond stamps she saved from the grocery store. Man am I datng myself. I remember her licking all those stamps and saving the books until she had enough. I love to plink with it for sure. I also have a ruger 10-22 I love as much. I am in the process of redoing the stock due to a very poor attempt by the previous owner. It is a shooter and fun to play with. For 11 dollars a brick you can spend an afternoon shooting and having a blast
