My son & I got out about 4:30. Had a doe at 30 yards at about 6 pm but decided to wait for a better shot and wasn't offered one. 10 minutes later this guy showed up. He acted like he had seen me & we stared at each other about 10 minutes. He then walked out and offered a good broadside shot at about 35 yards. Shot was spot on- he went about 60 yards. Only way it could've been better would be if my son got the shot. My son reminded me as we were dragging him out that this one was #99. This is my best deer to date. Not sleeping well tonight! Good luck all! Tom

Hollywood, Way to go nice deer!!!!!! Looks like a nine pt with a broken drop tine? That is some exciting stuff, hate those stare downs but you won! Now go out and get your boy one !! ps, what is his spread? Looks pretty wide.

No drop tine- what you see is a hole in the antler. The taxidermist said it is caused by a fly that goes in a deers nose and eventually comes out the antler when in velvet- if the fly goes the wrong way (into the brain) the deer dies. Have seen these before but didn't know the cause- I assumed it was caused from outside while in velvet. I'm not big into numbers- I'm a meat hunter- taxidermist said it measures 138". It was 21" wide & the tips of the brow tines are 8" apart. This is the first deer I've ever had mounted.

Jon- I thought back to a thread you started once on quitting smoking. This buck was shot on my Mom's 74th birthday, also my 1 year anniversary of no smoking. Funny- I hadn't thought of that til now. I was supposed to bring the cake to Mom's by 8 pm. A call to my wife at 7 as we were trailing the deer & she took over from there. We were at the party by 8:10, just in time to sing!

Hollywood,
It feels good to not smoke huh. I still miss a cig every now and then but have not smoked in a long time now. I have not chewed either.
I do nitice the deer seem to have no idea that you are there now. I killed a lot of deer when I smoked but they just seem less like they know I am there now.
I feel great from a phyical perspective, like the lungs I had when I was 15 years old. I never seem to really get tied or winded walking up a hill anymore.
Congrats on your 1 year of no smoking.
Funny how the timing works out sometimes. I shot that buck this year before Church had enough time to get him home, showered and still get to Sunday school 10 minutes early.
Congrats again on a great deer.
Jon
