it's a fact by me that there are some locals that just wait, you see them cruising the road, to see when the out-of-towners leave. My neighbor (who has been such a help) keeps an eye on my place and has kicked off people. Here is a little thing we do, on your posted signs don't use your real name, the trespassers do read, use it as a signal that they don't know your real name when asked and are trespassing. Nobody on our property has permission except my neighbor and his boy so that cuts down on the problem.

thats a good idea but what happens if they question you about your name and its not the same name as the sign? like what happened to me. i guess im going to have to try and get up there as much as possible all year round. i only have land no house so its hard for me to stay for long periods of time.

I know the DEC has these blue cards that as a landowner you can have people sign and have to show if you let them use your property, they are called ASK cards ,i used to get them from landowners who let the DEC stock pheasants on their property and allow the public to hunt.you had to get the card from the owner first.anyway all you have to do is say wheres your permission card?oh no card beat it or im calling the troopers .pine bush?no motels in the area?i used to go to new paltz i know theres some motels over there. or get a big tent and a portable heater

Unfortunately this is an old problem for lots of people. I've battled trespassers for twenty years.
Patrolling the land daily helps but I found the only thing that the trespassers respected was the DEC. The law.
These were neighbors. Local people. Supposed to be "the good ones". They took more advantage than any out-of towner. Because of the neighbor issue I tried to be nicer than I should have been. They kept coming back, knowing my schedule.
DEC took care of them by making a few phone calls and a few home visits.
Carry a camera when you patrol. Taking a photo of the trespassers also is a great help with the problem.
Those great little digital cameras also take a short video, which can is really amusing when having to prove that the trespassers were on your land. You can record with the little thing and they don't know it's recording. Perfect to present to them when they deny being on the land.
