my father, brother and i made our way up Sunday morning to go hunting. i get to our land and park my truck, as we're sitting there at 5am, its pitch black, its still to early to go in so we are waiting to go in, i hear foot steps approaching, i sware it sound like an animal was about to run into the side of my truck. as i turn and look out the driver side window i see a man standing there with a rifle in his hands. talk about getting the nuts scared out of you. i get out of my truck and he ask me what we are doing here, now remind you this is my fathers POSTED property that we have owned for 10 years. i ask him what he doing here and he tells me hes going hunting. we tell him we own the property and he arguees with us, telling us that we are lieing and do not own the property. i tell him to look at the POSTED sign and he tells me there aren't any, wean while he just walked right past a tree with a POSTED sign on it. after 15min of convincing him that this was our property he finally understands it and leaves. i found out he lives near my property and has hunted it before. does no care about POSTED signs? i don't understand. in the afternoon my uncle and my 3 cousins meet up with us and join us hunting. as my uncle is leaving the woods he sees a man hiding behind a tree with plain clothes. the man was trying not to be noticed and my uncle asks him what he is doing and he replys, me and 2 friends are hunting. my uncles tell him the land is posted and you are trespassing and he said that he would get his two friends and leave. what would you have done if this happened to you? what should i do if this keeps up?

Without compromising anyone's safety, try to get info on the suspects. Physical description, ask them their name, are they wearing any identifiable clothing, back tags? Do they have a vehicle? Description and license plate if possible. Try to pass on enough info so that the DEC officer might actually have some leads to follow.

I will give you one chance and after that call the troopers. I walked my property on Sunday and found two spots where guys were standing "on my property" opening day. They were at least 50' over the border but not walking around. Just be careful when approaching these people, they are breaking the law and have a gun in hand, your life is worth so much more than getting these guys off your land, let the authorities handle it.

i guess a few people have had this problem in the past. authorities should do something about this because no one seems to care about posted signs. years ago people used to have a lot of respect and wouldnt think about walking onto another persons posted property. now a days no one cares about anything and people feel they can do whatever they want.

lots of times thee locals dont have respect for absent landowners"well my daddy hunted that property etc..." we had problems like that at our camp.I put an end to it by showing up unexpected all the time with my shotgun in hand

backtags do not have to be displayed in the northern zone. You have the right to ask anyone for their license on your land. failing to show it is another charge. If possible get a license plate number and a description of the person. The only time it happened to us the guy got up left and did not return. But again be careful they have a gun and obviously do not mind breaking the law.
