This one happened right near where I used to live and hunt.
DEANSBORO, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Knapp family of Deansboro is still in shock over an incident that happened at their home this weekend.
Hunter arrested after shot hits house
A hunter misfired in the woods behind their house and the slug ended up lodged in their infant's changing table.
Before that, it went through the wall of their home and right through the baby's mattress, spraying shrapnel in the air.
Jeffrey Knapp says his son, Josh, had just been removed from the crib about 15 minutes before the incident.
The hunter, Gene Whipple of Waterville, has been charged with reckless endangerment. Although police say he was beyond the 500 feet from the residence required by state law, his actions were still reckless.
Unfortunately, incidents like this are not unheard of. In November a Swan Lake, New York, toddler was killed by a hunter's misfire. New York State police say bullets into homes are not that common but the potential for tragedy goes without saying.
The Knapps hope that their scare will bring awareness to other hunters.
" It all goes down to common sense; you have to know where you are...no deer is worth anyone's life, that's what it boils down to," said Jeffrey Knapp

its only a handfull of hunters that make the whole hunting community look very bad. that statement is so true you always have to know where you are and what is around you. stories like this make my stomach turn.

That was the second incident that day
On Saturday, Stephen Skiff Jr., 23, of Glenfield, fired his 12-guage shotgun at a deer near East Fifth Street in Oneida Castle when a round entered a house through a window and landed in the kitchen Saturday morning, Oneida County sheriff's deputies said. Skiff was charged with three counts of reckless endangerment and one count of criminal mischief, deputies said.

That's a pretty high number of incidents this year and I'm sure there are more locally that have not been posted this season. Maybe homeowners should be allowed to return fire! Trailer park residents in tornado flats must be sleeeping well these days.

Another case of not using common sense when hunting and letting rounds fly. Luckily no one was hurt this time...
