So much for burning any powder today. That was the plan anyhow, but I'm missing the wedge (below the sight) for the cva 50 Hawkens. Glad I noticed this, it doesn't see alot of range time so probably a good thing they need a good cleaning even if not fired in a while. That may have sucked! Did some searching on line this morning but I'm not coming up with anything. One more thing. What durable options do I have for ram rod materials? Mine splintered and left the jag lodged in the barrel? Wanting to burn some powder lately with some of my spare time.

wooly Did you get the broken rod /jag out of the barrel? The part you are mising is called the wedge pin. Email Mark at customer service. his address is mark@cva.com I am sure he can help you out with a wedge pin. He quick to respond and the go to guy in customer service. As far as a ram rod goes, They make universal cut to length fiberglass and metal rods. A wooden rod is nice, but not as versatile as the others. Nice looking rifle by the way. Just a tip when you get the new wedge pin. bend it slightly in the middle. This will cause it to stay in tight and not lose another. Midsouth shooter supply has soem on their site also. They are listed for a traditions half stock rifle, but they are the same. www.midsouthshooterssupply.comThere is also one on ebay I searched under cva parts. It was second or third on the list for 6.95 buy it now. cgi.ebay.com/Muzzleloader-Black-Powder-Brass-Wedge-for-a-CVA-

Yep jags out and barrels ready to roll. I had the fiberglass rod but the whole insert popped off with the jag. Not sure what caused it to splinter or when it did but such is life. Thanx for the links and tip on the wedge pin. It's not the first time I've lost it 3x's and managed to find it once in the bottom of the cabinet, and another time on the kitchen floor post hunt. Makes me wonder if this is a common problem seeing you recomend to bend it. I won't take any more chances with that and will heed your advise.
Thanx again Bubba. Hoping to have her up and smoking again soon.

well it isnt just cva. I had to bend the one in my T/C hawken and my new englander. It just stiffens them up. The trick is not to bend it too much just enough to tighten it up.

I'm finding this thing listed for $4 and some change, then they want to whack me with a $16 shipping fee. I'm thinking I may be better off checking out the Gun Center to see if they have one in stock or can order one factory direct. Probably have enough change from a $20 to put towards the new rod.

50 to 75 yards is all I ever shot any of my traditional open sight muzzleloaders in a hunting situation. I would prefer to be sure of where it is going. Oh yeah my t/c hawken is a tack driver with patched round balls at 100 yards, but I dont trust myself at that distance with a hunting scenario. Plus if you put that little bend in the wedge pin, it will tighten up the barrel to stock and it will shoot better. If you think about it, when the pin can fall out, that would be like having a forend or stock screw loose when shooting a modern gun. Barrel play is a big factor in accuracy. I bet you will find a difference after you tighten it up.

That makes perfect sence to me. It'll be interesting to see if there are any improvements. Never really gave that much thought before even knowing the problem existed.
Open site shooting is my weakness so I don't expect to add much effective range to the gun. It's always been more of a fun gun to me anyhow that doesn't log many field hours and only has 2 does notched in her stock on 2 shots fired. She's more than capable. Everybody loves to shoot it, but it's SOOOOO darn heavy it's a bear to hold still if ya ain't used to it. I'll have to set it up on some bags and see what happens with a good solid rest.

Wooly i live on harlem right down the street. I just went to a muzzleloader shoot out at my club today. It was a 15 target course. Great time i shot okay, but you have to use lead so i had to resight in real quick because i was using sabots. Wooly when you get sighted in let me know you can bring it out to the club we got a shoot next month.

My dad makes his own balls so i used them with a patch along with 100grains of pyrodex. They worked fine and im thinking of making the transition to them for regular hunting. Bubba do you think there is a major difference in terms of impact and the destruction in your experiences?
