In a traditional sidelock, I always used patched round balls. I have taken whitetails witht hem. Youneed to have a good shot placement. The best shot is heart lung and a shoulder with round balls. A 50 vcaliber 490 round ball weaighs 177 grains. When they penetrate, I have seem them flatten out to the size of a quarter, and keep penetrating. If you think about it, this country was freed from england with patched rounds balls, mostly 32 and 45 caliber. If they will stop a man, they will stop a whitetail or even up to a buffalo and elk as they did in pioneer days. I have never seen evidence of one breaking up unless it hits serious bone. Most pioneers used a 45 caliber round ball for everything from defense to hunting ot survival. Out to 80 yards or so, they are deadly. so the short answer is you cant go wrogn with them. It is what the gun was designed for, especially one with a 1 in 66 twist.

a modern mkuzzleloader has a 1:28 twist generally. Older traditional muzzleloaders were a 1:66 twist which was designed for patched round balls. Then they moved to a 1:48 twist which is pretty much universal for both patched round balls and conicals and sabots. A 1:28 twist will not stabilize patched round balls well as it is too fast of a twist which causes the ball to turn too fast like throwing a curve ball. A lsower twist handles them much better. I hope that cleared it up from a guy wth a masrers lol
