I went up to the Town Clerk's office today and bought my "lifetime Sportsman's License . The regular clerk wasn't there and the two assistants didn't seem to know squat ! ...

I should have done that back when I started hunting...Would have paid for itself within time.

Keep in mind that the lifetime Sportsman, NOT superSportsman license will still be available for $600 until October 1st this year then it jumps to $765. Also, the Bow, and Muzzleloader lifetimes are going up. DO the math and you will see that if the prices stay where they are at (which they most likely won't) if you can swing it, buy it now. The potential savings would benefit the outdoorsman.
After talking with other hunters, the general jist is that coming up with the money up front is the issue. Here is a little suggestion a buddy and I came up with. If you have generous gift givers in the family, have them all pitch in for your combined B-day, Christmas, Fathers Day, Grandparents Day, Groundhogs Day, whatever Day and hopefully you can get the gift that gives all year for any holiday. I am still on the fence about getting it but I see the prices going up within the next 35 to 40 years of my hunting career so I am thinking seriously about it.

Now hunting is getting to the point that its going to be cheaper to buy a side of beef. It's a crock of @$^*^% SORRY TO RANT BUT I'M GETTING SICK OF THIS CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My Pop went down to get his license, he is 78, handicapped and served this country at time of war. His fee doubled to 10 bucks and had to pay the doe permit fee. He would never not buy a license it is sort of a ritual for him but man they are sticking it to us.

Huntingfreak, I think just like you do. I think it's out of control. While a lifetime license isn't a bad option, coming up with the money for it, is. I just came off of a 6 month layoff all of 2 months ago. I'd be lucky if I can afford the Small/Big Game, and the "No Guarantee-but pay the $10 anyway" doe permits. In my opinion, we get it "stuck to us" because we don't say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! There is not enough unity to stop this insanity. We are effectively shafting ourselves. Some of us want to fight against this crap, while others will always go with the status quo, which, in my opinion, in the long run, will make hunting a rich man only sport in the long run. Europe is a prime example of that. I've been a hardcore hunter all my life. However, being hardcore, and living with the reality that you just simply can't afford it, is two different stories. Now, all indications are that lifetime license sales are up, and the other licenses, are down dramatically. Simply put, overall license sales, at least right now, compared to the same time frame in other years, are drastically lower. I know that when to WalMart about 3 days ago, there wasn't a soul at the sporting goods counter. I milled around that area for a good 20 minutes, and not one person even requested a license. That doesn't look good. In fact, there weren't even any people browsing the hunting section at all! Now, let's just say for the sake of argument that everyone bought a lifetime license. This would also be an ultimate downfall for sportsmen in a year or two. The fact of the matter is, that the DEC would claim to need more revenues. How do they do that if everyone had a lifetime license? It's very simple-they'll price the items that are not included with the standard lifetime through the roof. Either way, we're going to pay through our noses in the long run. The main question is, when do we stand shoulder to shoulder, and say NO MORE!

I plunked down the $960 for the lifetime sportsman, archery and muzzleloader tags...Stings a bit but will be a wise investment in the long run...I just wish I had done it 10 years ago...
If I were to wait until after 10/1 to purchase them, it would have cost me $275 more...
