Any of my fellow SZ hunters out there seeing deer while on stand? I have hunted everyday since Saturday and have only seen 3 deer up close but 1 was before daylight and the other 2 were at 5pm on Monday night. Thats it. Another thing I have noticed is that they are on a weird schedule already. A week ago they were seen all over at all times of the day. Now they are moving before legal shooting light and after dark. Hopefully the time change will get them moving while I'm on stand so I can let some arrows fly.

I hunted the first three days and seen deer each morning and evening. Had the same little three point under me each morning. I can't believe how vocal the bucks in my area are already . I've heard four different bucks grunting already - I heard grunting each morning that I was out. Even heard two bucks fighting on opening morning. Never did see the size of their horns - they were just behind some pines where I could't get a good look at em. Unfortunatley I'm working right thru this weekend and won't be able to get back out until Monday and Tuesday. Then I'll be on second shift for a week and will be able to hunt every morning. Good luck everyone...

I just read on another forum that up north the bucks are chasing does already. The person who wrote it was from the Oneida area. They stated a cold front was moving in. We need a few more frosty mornings here to get their blood pumping. Oh I forgot about the turkeys I saw. I had a nice sized hen with 4 little ones in tow walk right under my stand on Saturday. Was neat to see how little they were. And the 1 deer I saw just before good light stopped and bleated at me. I swore that deer had a Primos can!!!

I have been reading about this early chasing for a couple weeks now. I havent seen anyyet and think it is way to early but the roadkills are way up similar to what you see in the rut so maybe some does are coming in early with all this cloudy weather we have been having. IMO things wont get rolling until next weekend. Halloween is my magic day.
I have also heard alot about this new sound the bucks are making this year. The "buck growl" I have never heard of it before so they must have just learned it this year. A buddy bought the Mad version of this call and I watched the marketing DVD last night. I was able to duplicate the sound by blowing into my grunt call as hard as I could. I think there are other ways to make the call such as excessive chili or pickled egg consumption...LOL
I will be listening for this new sound and will not part with the $$ until I personally hear it or the success stories become overwhelming.
Good luck and be safe

Well I had an encounter on Saturday, finally!!! I got out to the stand late around 3:45pm. The wind was blowing in all directions so I decided to just wait patiently to see what would happen. At approximately 4:45pm I looked to my left and there was a fawn at 15 yards. She moved out into the field edge and was feeding to my right. She walked right through my shooting lane to the left and fed for a few more minutes until she finally came right in front of me to about 5 yards perfectly broadside. I resisted temptation and heard a grunting noise and footsteps in the leaves behind me. I stood like a statue and then caught movement to my right again. I looked and it was a huge doe grunting at her fawn. I had never heard that before coming from a doe but it was neat. As they fed in front of me I heard more footsteps and this doe came in as well to feed out in front of me. I noticed she was limping and I saw her foot was swollen so I decided if the shot was there I would take it. They all moved in my shooting lane about 25 yards away and then the last one turned towards me and closed the distance. At 17.5 yards she turned broadside just before entering the thicket and I let the arrow fly. I hit about 4 inches behind the shoulder and got lungs but must have hit a rib in the process and the exit wound came out low tearing through the bottom of the liver and puncturing the almighty stink pot of a stomach. She ran 20 yards and bedded down. I waited 35 minutes and retrieved the arrow and jumped her but she ran 10 yards and stopped so I left. This was around 6:15 ish. I went back at 9pm with flashlights in hand and my brother in law and I found her in about 2 minutes. Not the greatest picture but she went about 130lbs. Pretty nice for my second deer ever with the bow. Now it's time to shoot a buck.

Thanks HC - It's the best I could get with the camera phone - And besides, everyone is used to seeing the butt end of these critters as they are running away so I figured I would follow suit.

Got up early yesterday and was going to head to Groveland. The forecast was rain and it was raining pretty good so I went back to bed. I drove down to Groveland later and visited with my mother then went down to my sister in law's place in Geneseo . I sat in a treestand from 3-6 pm . Saw 6 doe and 2 bucks . All at a distance . I watched ,what looked to be a fork horn chase a couple doe around while a nice (maybe 8 pt) buck stood and watched . The closest deer was about 90 yards . It was windy and cold . Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr !
