Has anyone here purchased a new muzzleloader to take into the woods this year? or What muzzleloader are you hunting with in 2005? With all this talk of rifle hunting in NY it seems that we have forgotten about the muzzleloader.
I'll be taking either my CVA Hunterbolt in 50cal or my H&R Huntsman in 50cal. The CVA has a Tasco Black Powder World Class 2-8x32 scope mounted on it and the Huntsman has a Bushnell Banner 3-9x32 scope.
Both of these guns are great shooters and either one will get the job done this fall...

I got the CVA optima .50 back in June. I have yet to get to the range w/ it and check it out, but I'm hoping to in the next week or two. I plan on hunting w/ it this gun season. Just received the aero tip bullets and primers 2 weeks ago. I'm gonna keep it scopeless for the time being as the shots are never more than 75 yards or so where I gun hunt. We'll see how it goes and decide on the scope for next season if necessary.

Not only do I plan to use it during muzzleloading, I plan to use my encore 209x50 all season. I got the conversion to 25 acp and it shoots great. I am off next week the week of the 17th because that is muzzleloading season here, and I plan to hunt all week. If the weather cooperates, I will use my traditions flintlock for a hunt or two with patched round balls and real black powder. My encore has a bushnell banner 3x9x40 on it and it is ready to go. I shoot 90 grains of loose 777 ffg and t/c shockwave bullets 250 grain with a harvester sabot.Dumps em on top of each other at 100 yards. Where I plan to hunt the most this season, that will be a long shot.

Hey guys. I am new to posting, but have been visiting the site for awhile. What are your thoughts on the T/C Omega? Have have been hunting with bow and shotgun (some rifle in PA also) for a few years with good success. However, every year I wish that I had purchased a muzzleloader when the late season comes around. The price tag on the Omega is hefty, but thingy's has had one on sale for several weeks. Please let me know if you or any of your hunting buddies has tried one out.

Ahh...Been checking out the ads for Thingy's again...You need to put in D*i*c*k's Sporting Goods in order to show that name because the filter changed the name to thingy's. Anyway, if you are looking into an Omega why not pony up a little extra dough and buy the Encore Muzzleloader. That way you can purchase other barrels and switch them out. The Encore can be outfitted with shotgun, rifle and muzzleloader barrels so your options are almost limitless. I've heard good things about the Encore ml but I have heard nothing about the Omega...

We will be shooting the Omega on a few hunts later this season. We used it last year and it is a fine rifle! Definitely easy to clean, and accurate once you find the right load....

Thanks for the feedback guys. Most firearm purchases now have to be approved by the boss, er...my dear wife. The Encore is great, but I do not mind having a dedicated muzzleloader. Plus, that sale at DSports is tough to beat. Typically, I am still in the field during the late season with my bow. So a muzzleloader may be a nice alternative. Take care.

I do most of my hunting down in Freedom. Occasionally I will bow hunt in Farmersville or hit Great Valley the last weekend of the regular season while visiting Ellicottville with some non-hunting friends.
I spoke with the land owner in Freedom this past weekend. He is a great guy. I was just down checking the rub lines and wanted to talk to him about the regular season and rifle usage. Neither he nor any of his family own a rifle, so I will be sticking with my shotgun this year. Maybe if they invest after the season I can pull my A-Bolt out next year.

Well I picked up the Omega yesterday at D*i*c*k*s. Actually I gave Gander Mountain a chance to price match the deal, but the advertisement listed it as a D Sports exclusive. Basically Gander has the updated T/C Omega SS w/ a fluted barrel, mine has a standard SS barrel. For $100 less I'll take it. I need to put some glass up top and hit the range. If all goes well on the bow stand this weekend, I can hit the range next weekend.

Well the weekend was not the time to sight in the Omega. My wife gave birth to our first child on 11/2! He is awesome. Back to the world of hunting... I put some meat in the freezer last weekend by filling an archery antlerless tag. Remarkably, it was on the ground (again). I am not sure that it is a good thing, but this is the 4th deer that I have taken on the ground with my bow since 2002. Sometimes I will climb down from the stand if the deer are not moving. It has paid off thus far, although my preference is to shoot from the stand. I picked up some Pyrodex pellets today. Have any of you guys used Triple 7? My buddy swears by it. However, I want to start simple until my confidence is built up and I can experiment in the off season. If anyone else has picked up a T/C ML lately, what did you think of the DVD that they include with the ML? I love to read, but the DVD is a nice starting point for a novice like me. They explained how to use the ML and accessories, went over terminology, demonstrated proper cleaning, and packed in some hunting footage. It was pretty cool.
