I went out over the weekend with the muzzleloader. We made some drives on state land or I should say state lake. Anyway that was unsuccessful. My friend from cicero was up with his daughter. She has hunted for a few years and had not shot at a deer yet. So, I took her to one of my better stands on the edge of an alfalfa field with the swamp behind me. Anyway at 5:40 2 deer came up the field and stopped in front of us at 25 yards. A nice doe and a younger deer, a yearling. She remained surprisingly calm and took aim. Anyway she shot under the doe and it took off. I am staying out of there for a few days. I went out for a while today, but, right now am waiting to contact the vet to see if I can pick up my pointer from being neutered this morning. If I can pick him up at 4 like they said, I will get him home and go out this evening.

I got out tonight and took my 13 year old nephew with me. He wanted to see if the turkeys might appear, so, we did that. Anyway we got up in my stand and were sitting there trying to stay dry during the evening. About 5:15, the turkeys appeared in front of us at about 35 yards. He took his trusty Rossi single shot 20 gauge and picked out a nice big hen and knocked her right over. He was so happy and I was so proud of him for being patient and picking a good bird. Tomorrow night is bbq turkey.

It was good.
It was nice and frosty this morning when I got out.Was a balmy 28 degrees. I went to a new spot where I have a ground blind. As the sun came up which was lovely there were a couple deer in the alfalfa about 175 yards away. I sat and watched them as they worked their way off the meadow. About 8:15, there were 4 deer came out and were miling around in the meadow and bedded down in the sunshine. There were 2 young bucks a spike and a 6 point, no size to them. All were well outside my comfort zone with a muzzleloader anyway. I left about 10:30 so I could get my check and hang on to it long enough to deposit it to pay the bills fill my jeep and wave bye bye to it.
My daughter had a soccer game tonight so, I went to it and she dismissed me for not missing one and told me to go hunting. I left after the first quarter around 4 pm. I like my Dad duties too. Anyway I climbed into my tree stand and watched an array of birds, squirrles and various other critters, but no deer. Tonight ended muzzleloading season here in the north, so, now regular season starts. and I have no dmp, so I am allowed one buck until late muzzleloading season. I think I may back off a bit and possibly wait until closer to rut and try some scent and rattling. I have made up my mind I plan to take a bigger buck and let the young ones walk if it means no meat this winter. Where we are hunting there is an over abundance ofcoyotes, so, I plan to wage a bit of a war there to see if I can reduce the number. Now I have to pull my encore apart and clean it up put the 257 roberts barrel on it clean the 50 caliber and be ready for tomorrow. Best of luck to you all.

We got out this morning for a few drives on state land. The big fiery ball is the sky scared us all a bit, but, then we remembered it was the sun. We made a drive along a couple ridges between a small and large swamp. It is pretty much a funnel for the deer. There were 4 watchers and one driver. Anyway, I saw 5 deer all no antlers. No one in our party has any dmps, so we are hunting antlers only until late muzzleloading. 3 nice does and 2 young ones. They came about 50 yards from me, jumped up on a small ridge behind me and laid down within sight of me. It was nice and it was as many deer as I saw all last season. We are going to go out tonight to the farm and sit in some woods areas between the alfalfa field and the swamp. Hopefully it will work out. I saw three scrapes this morning along the ridge I was sitting on, so, they are getting started.

I went out last night and sat in a tree stand. After I was up there and was settled in, I noticed one of the zippers on my fanny pack was open. It was of course the one my tags were in. So, I am tagless until Monday when I can get a replacement. Yeah I could have gotten one today at walmart, but, the money was a bit short until tomorrow, so am home today. Oh well live and learn.

took my 2 dogs out Monday after work to do some sniffing around. My new pointer found a couple grouse but was a bit aggressive and flushed them way too soon. He was hard to keep in control, but he is just a pup at 9 months. It was fun to watch them work. My old lab just sniffed around and rolled around and ran with the pointer. I enjoyed watching them play and work. With some work I think he will be a good dog to work the pheasants and grouse. I am starting to lean more toward some small gaming and leaving the deer alone this season. My nephew can join me and hunt and we will have a good old time. I guess I am getting old. Plus a good feed of pheasant sounds pretty good right now

I went out with my nephew tonight and we got in the stand next to the big alfalfa field. We got there around 330 and settled in. It was warm and some rain was spitting. Anyway about 415 a couple nice does came out in the end of the field across from us. They worked their way across to within 20 yards of the stand and milled around and ate with no clue we were there. They stayed and fed until dark then went off the field. We stayed still and waited cuz I did not want to spook them off getting down. It was nice to see some deer, and I was waiting for the buck to follow, but, he didnt. Seeing some scrapes around, so, at least the bucks are ready. My nephew was quite excited and can not wait until he can hunt deer himself

Well it was a warm but interesting weekend. First thing I did Saturday morning was find my original license back next to the swamp I hunted when I lost it. Now I have twice as many tags to look at after season. We made a drive on state land Saturday morning and didnt see anything. I got home around 10:30 and did some things around the house. I picked up my nephew and went to my evening watch around 2. We sat until dark and did not see anything. I got up Sunday morning and got a call my buddies were not going, so I hung around home and cleaned and organized my garage so I could get my jeep in before the snows start. I left around 9 am and went to a piece of woods I have not been hitting much as I was waiting for the rut. Anyway I was in my stand about 940 and stayed there until dark. I didnt see anything, but, I got caught up on some reading and got a great nap in the sun. Even though I did not see anything, it was very quiet and peaceful and I enjoyed it a lot. I called the local DEC officer asking what I should do now that I found my original license and he did not have an answer. He advised me to call the office where I bought it in the first place and see if they know. Best of luck to all of you

well it worked out today. My buddy and I were the only ones hunting and we had about 2 inches of snow. We went to state land to make a couple small drives I always liked. Anyway after we were in the woods for about 25 minutes I started a drive and heard my buddy fire his Ruger 270. When I got to him, he had a nice 10 point 170 pound buck on the ground. It was about a mile drag out of the woods and we were glad to get to the road. I am the guy on the right with yes the orange hat on. Pics below thanks to fast eddie
