He certainly is alert so any movement and he's going to haul butt . I would just stand there and hope that he moves along and affords me a shot ..........

This pic was interesting to me. Other than being an absolutely gorgeous photo I think this buck is multi-tasking.
That right ear craned to his right side instead of hoaning in on me like a radar gun in a speed trap says to me that something else is going on there. He looks slightly confused as to what he should be paying more attention to or what he should do next. I think we both stumbled into each other, but the odds of him breaking his concentration from me first are in my favor.
A turn of the head is all its gonna take for me to draw a bead on this dude and then wait for his next move. If he starts the hoove stomp, I aint scared and as you guys have said I'm gonna try to let him settle down and turn back the way he came for the best broadside or quartering shot he'll offer.
The second I see that tail flicker and the neck stretch going on, I'm putting a slug through his brisket left shoulder side. I feel confident I can make the decision for him when the gig is up before he does.
Don't blink, you may miss your chance at dropping him in his tracks with any of these weapons.

without knowing whats behind him im leary i also am not a big fan of full frontal shots(on deer) so if i knew the lay of the land, those trees look like they would stop a bullet as he quaters he's a gonner, filed dressed and back at the truck by 900 am

The buck has the upper hand here. Most likely he will bolt with no shot. A quick shot here has low odds so probably wouldn't shoot. I'm with fast eddie and would just wait him out.

well lets see opening day I am heading into my stand, it is not going to be legal since I am in my stand before legal light, he walks without hesitation. A law breaker I am not.

Good points by all! Lot of factors going on here in this pic. I can see both sides to a decision either way. Ultimately the one behind the trigger will have to make this choice under pressure without the time to pick it apart like has been done here.
Bubba, you had an extra 1/2 dozen sausages and 3 eggs for breakfast and gotta answer natures call! On your way back to the truck........?

I believe he was implying he's on his way to his stand in the AM and it is dark out at that time so it would be impossible to get this picture

I know it is daylight. No proof the sun was up. There is a difference. If it is not sunrise, still an illegal shot. I like to play devils advocate. The picture was taken from a distance with a zoom lens I will bet. I do not bow hunt anymore, so it would be muzzleloading for me. If I could get in a position to get a good shot, I would take the shot. That straight on shot is a very effective shot if placed right. Ther trick will be getting into position. Remain totally still and hope the wind is in your favor. If not it is game over anyway. If I were heading out to for lack of a nicer word evacuate myself, probably when I saw him I would evacuate anyway right there. if all factors were in place. I would sit tight and hope I could get the gun up to take the shot. However the chances of that are slim and taking a risky not sure shot is not my style either. Plus if he walks I will be rewarded with his father or bigger brother anyway.

Patience is the name of the game. Although I think I'd evacuate myself as Bubba stated whether I had the extra eggs and sausage or not. I would be frozen except for my legs shaking to see what he does and wait for the broadside or quartering shot as he turns to scoot.
And Wooly - you would be awful d**n lucky to run into that caliber of a deer, let alone standing still, on an Opening day in NY, LOL ;D

I hear ya, but with every season comes the dream! Been tromping around so much lately they don't even run from me anymore. Half the time they walk to me like they wanna wrastle or something, lol! May not even need a gun this year, I'll just use the two cannons God gave me!

to be honest I would be so shaky once seeing that guy that he would smell me go #2 in my pants and probably tromp off... but i would have a heck of a story to tell
