11-4-09 Last night I caught whatever my daughter had when I picked her up early from school Monday. Fever, sweats, nasty chest congestion and cough, tightness in my chest, and labored breathing. All signs point to the swine but when I woke up this morning I felt a little better. Went to my interview and it went well again. Now I just need to wait and see if they make an offer. They seemed impressed with me so thats a good thing.
My wife is sick as well and my son is getting it and my daughter is finally feeling better but still has the nasty cough. Wife also cancelled her appointment today so I took the opportunity to get out, low temp and runny nose and all. The cool air felt great and I could breathe without coughing. Was on stand at 2:45pm and stayed til 5:10ish. Saw an owl, a few squirrels, and a chipmunk. Forecast is calling for rain/snow mix then all rain tomorrow. I may pass so I can feel a little better and hit it early and all day Friday.

11-5-09 Stupid weather people. The forecast at 6 was for rain/snow mix then all rain in the morning. At 1130pm it changed. So I watched my Yankees win the series and went to bed. Got up at 545 and got dressed. Was on stand by 630. Was pretty light out already and I passed a spike that ran in front of the car 2 houses down from the in laws. Thought they might be moving this morning but nothing happening. I sat til 1030 and threw in the towel. Had a few more small bucks show up on cam this week checking the area out so they are cruising but mine were night pics mostly. Told the wife I am out all day tomorrow, rain, snow, sleet, or hail.

I had 2 pictures of my daughter and her friends with the deer up on here. Thats why the wife freaked because I didnt get permission from the parents to post a picture of their daughters on the internet. No biggie, I just took the 2 pictures down is all.
I hope it is only a matter of time because I have only seen 1 deer while on stand at the inlaws where the camera is this year. I can't figure it out, other than the doe arent coming in until well after dark. The bucks must knw this too and dont bother coming through too much during the day. I mean my buddy sat up there twice and on his 2nd sit, he shot the small 5. I couldnt get a shot at the big 5 and thats it for sightings. No doe whatsoever.
11-6-09 Well the alarm went off at 530. Snoozed it til 550 and then shut it off. You know the rest of the story. I was drained from this d**n cold so I slept, and slept some more. I ended up getting up at 10am. What a bum I am. Felt groggy but I got dressed warmly and headed out for the afternoon hunt. Flurries were spitting and there was gusty and swirly winds. I stuck it out and the wind died down. It was perfectly quiet. No squirrels, no nothing moving. I stayed until wayyy to dark even just to see if I could hear something coming out. Nadda. 4.5 hours yet again and no movement. Im thinking of getting some of those cronstruction flood lights and generators and lighting up the field so I can hunt really late, HAHAHAHAHA!!! Kidding of course.
My BIL called and said he had 3 doe under him but he wont shoot any doe on his place because they bring the bucks in. I made the mistake in 07 so I am staying clear of there for now. He asked me to come up in the morning but my buddy had asked me to hunt with him at his place in the morning where we went last weekend so thats where Im headed. He has morning movement on his cam with lots of doe in the area. Also have one pic of a doe with a huge mass growing on her underside. We want to end her suffering for sure. I'll post up tomorrow hopefully with at least a few sightings.

11-7-09 Alarm went off at 5:40am. got up and washed my face and brushed my teeth. Then I hear my cell ringing. Its my buddy and he is coughing and hacking. He isnt going out. I thought for about 10 seconds that I should go to the inlaws but opted for back to bed. Still not feeling 100% so Im glad I went back to bed.
Decided to hunt the afternoon with my buddy instead so we left at 1pm. Went to check my trailcam. Should've gone out this morning. Had deer under the stand at 630am and then again at 8am. Oh well, thats just my luck. We headed out and were in the stand by 145pm. He checked his cam and called me on stand. Had two different groups of doe in that morning as well. Also had a nice 5pt buck bed down in front of his cam. He laid there for over 2 hours from 230am to 430am. Had another buck in there at 715am. Of all the mornings we decide NOT to hunt cuz we arent feeling well. Anyways, sitting there enjoying the hunt when I hear the leaves rustle louder than the squirrels have been and hear a few twigs snap so I get my bow ready and then I see it. Two people coming down off the hill on the property line enjoying an afternoon stroll at 3:30pm. They came the direction the deer usually do so this hunt was over. Called my bud and we rushed to get to my inlaws for the last hour and a quarter. Made it there and didnt see anything. We plan o hitting his place in the morning, sick or not sick we are going.

11-8-09 This morning I was up just before the alarm went off. I had a good good feeling about today. My buddy drove the 10 minute drive and in that 10 minutes we spotted 10 deer so they were definately out this morning. I was settled in the stand by 615am and it was gorgeous out. At around 715 I spotted movement about 120 yards back in the woods at the end of a trail. It was a deer but was moving steady so I couldnt tell what it was. About 5 minutes later I can hear footsteps coming down the hill in front of me and then I see a deer come flying by me and then stop. Another deer came to within 40 yards of me grunting and stopped. I focused on the grunter for a few minutes and the one that passed me came back to it. They were both doe which surprised me, especially the grunting. I am watching and the first deer I saw off in the distance was coming in. She was the big momma. I see the 3 of them looking back up the hill and then hear more leaves thrashing. Next thing I know there are four more doe converging out in front of me and to the side of me. The fawns are bleating softly, and the three older deer are standing on their back legs whacking at each other with their front legs. They started to move off to my right and one medium doe came to within 25 yards but behind some junk. Then I watched as all 7 filtered by me, one by one, all out of range.
Although the shot wasnt there, my heart was a thumpin, and legs a wobblin. What an awesome sight to witness and not be detected. This lasted approx. 25 minutes. 5 minutes after they left, I heard a shot ring out. Sounded like a pistol from the neighbors place. Approx. 5 minutes after that, 2 deer come busting out of the pines to my right where the 7 had gone, and high tailed it back up the hill. Hunted til 930 and then got down to take some of the layers off as it was getting warm. When I got to my buddies stand he said the grandson was next door because he could hear them talking so must be he was shooting at squirrels. They were out in full force as well today.
All in all I saw 9 deer in an hour and a half. I should've slept in all of October and I'd be at the same amount of sightings while on stand, lol. I'm sure youve sensed my frustration in some of my other posts but I have a renewed sense and know that patience is the name of the game. I tend to lose sight of that often.
Theres a chance I could get out tomorrow for a bit, if not, my buddy has off Wednesday and so do the kids, so we plan on hunting all day. Field and Stream says its the best day to be in the woods all year so we are willing to give it a shot.

Zem, The four days I was up I didn't see much rut action. My brother had a hot doe around him but I think FS is right and this week right into the weekend will be good. Good luck!

Hey guys, yesterday while driving home off of rt 17 we saw this field. In the field was a doe and about 50 yards was this buck, a real nice one heading for her. 65 degrees about 4:00. Go figure??? The rut is on!

Fletch - It was cool to see. I have watched them in the field at my in laws house in the past. The funniest is when the fawns get all crazy and are bouncing around running circles. A few of those doe meant business though. I could hear the thwack on the back a few times so it isn't a love tap.
Don't even tell me my field as I surely won't believe you. I haven't seen a single deer in that feild all fall. But I agree, the weather won't change the bucks testosterone level, the amount of daylight does. So they will be chasing, even if it is 65 to 70 degrees out. We are supposed to get colder weather some Wednesday here so we will see. Even talked about going to sight in the last of the guns, my muzzleloader between morning and afternoon watches but it depends on the action in the stand.

11-10-09 I had convinced my wife to get my daughter on the bus this morning so I could get out hunting. Do't ask me how I did it, I just did. I was in the stand by 625am and it was a nice morning. Not too warm but not cold either. I had stood all morning as the seat cushion on my treestand squeaks when you sit or get up. Well around 845 I had enough so I decided to sit. No sooner did I sit and I hear footsteps coming in right behind me. I'm screwed at this point because the deer is within 30 yards of me and the seat will squeak if I get up. So I sit tight and try to turn my head to the left to see where the deer is. Next thing I know I see it coming out of the olive bushes and into the scrub field. I stand up and grab my bow. It is the big 5 coming out the exact spot he went in 2 Fridays ago when the "snort wheeze" incident took place. He proceeds tomove his way along and it looks as if he is going to either come straight on to me or just pass on by out of range. Well my FIL had gone up into his garage at this time and started making some noise down there. Not sure if thats what bothered him or if he was just on a mission bt he darted across the field down towards the house. I grunted twice and he stopped but kicked it back into 'see ya' mode and trotted off and down across the road.
What a beautiful buck he is. I'm determined to see him again but I have to alter my plan a little I think. We took a stand down a few years ago out of a pine tree that overlooks the scrub field. I think it needs to go back in that tree and I need to sit there. Both times I have seen him, he either went in, or came out in the corner of that scrub field and walked within 25 yards of that pine tree. I'm going to talk with my buddy and see if he'll help me put that stand up tomorrow sometime between hunts. If I hunt that stand exclusively, I will get him, but I give up the chance at maybe seeing other deer back in the woods that I cannot see from the pine tree. Its a catch 22 but I think it will be worth it.
