Stay in stand as much as possible. I notice they tend to move later in the morning during the full moon.
Good luck out there!

Yea I like that name. I have a spot set up that is close to the corn on a major run. It has a good view all around so he should be able to see a distance. I have a double tree stand set up with a 20 yard shot to the run and corn. It should be fun!

Well guys here it goes-we get up to the cabin Wed evening and hunt all day Thursday taking an hour break at noon. My brother saw a few doe and I had a 6 pt just out of range. In the afternoon I take a shot at a nice doe but shoot under her and my brother just has a few doe out of range. Friday morning I have Momma bear and her cub show up-check out the video from my cell phone. What an experience! The sad part is there were 2 cubs a few weeks ago??? I don't see any deer but the bear was enough. My friend Craig and his son Zach come up Friday night and I mentor Zach for the weekend. Zach is only 14 and just by talking with him I could tell he's got what we all have in our sole, the desire to hunt. We hit the woods Sat morning and Jeff has a hot doe and three bucks around his stand. He shoots at a nice 6pt but misses and then gets a shot at a big spike but misses again. Zach and I don't see anything until 9:30 when two doe run right up to us but we get no shot. Another small deer comes by and my brother pushes it to us and at 15 yards Zach is at full draw and the deer is running by us. He holds on the shot and passes his first test! That afternoon we get back in at 1 and don't see anything until 4:30. A button buck walks in from the brush and Zach waits out the deer and shoots at 18 yards and nails it!!!!! His first day ever hunting small or big game !!!! Welcome to the "brotherhood!" He does a great job gutting the deer and getting it back to the cabin. In conversation he tells me he would never shoot anything he wasn't prepared to eat, passes test 2. The kid's unreal-a pleasure to hunt with and gets an invite back to the cabin whenever he wants. I have a picture of the two of us with the buck. Sunday morning I miss again at a mature doe 20 yards. If I don't get a deer this year it wouldn't bother me, just the look on Zach's face when he harvested his deer was priceless! Bill Jorden always says it at the end of the show, "if you get a chance- take a kid fishing or hunting" It was a great pleasure for me.

Whats all that white stuff in the video? It was stinking 65 degrees here today.
Well congrats to Zach and congrats to the teacher as well. That had to be awesome to experience. I can't wait until my kids are old enough to go if they want to. And the shot placement is unbelievable. I've never taken one in the "pocket" so he must be a hell of a shot. Keep practicing Zach and you will be just fine.
Now my advice for the seasoned hunters you wrote about including yourself, Practice, practice, practice!!!! LOL we all miss at some point. Thank goodness they were clean misses.
Glad you guys had a good weekend.

Zem, oh boy did we miss!!!!!! I had two perfect broadside shots. Yes they were all clean misses, Zach really showed us up! We had every type of weather imaginable on Thursday and finished up with an inch of snow. Zach is a good shot and real calm in the stand.

Yup it works. I have never seen a bear in the wild. None around here.
I have seen their tracks up in the dacks years ago and some sign when I was out in Idaho.

Great! It was pretty cool. The last two years our field has been in corn and they feed there all the time. Both years a mother and two cubs. When I saw them 1 cub was gone, heard someone in the area shot a small bear, probably the cub which is illegal.

Guys, I have email exchanges with David Riehlman who is the senior wildlife biologist in Cortland. I sent him the picture of me and Zach, the story about the whole mentoring process and the day of the hunt. He asked for permission to possibly use the photo and story in presentations and the regulation guide for next year. How cool is that. I'm in the publishing business and know how these things go, just the thought of it was exciting, Zach thought it would be pretty cool. His exact words were "sweet"
