Preparations have been made. Anticipation has been building and building. [glow=red,2,300]Zero Hour is upon us. [/glow]
This is the year that the trophy will fall!![/color] Well it is good to dream isn't it? And the dream isn't too far fetched after checking my trail cam today. This is what I am after this year, just like last year, so stay tuned and I will tell the detailed story as it progresses.

Thanks Fletch. I'm going to give it my all. I was up helping mow the lawn at the inlaws last night, just cruising on the tractor. I happened to glance up out in the field up by my stand and I see a buck standing up there right in front of my stand. I put the tractor away and go back over to take another peek. he follows the trail in front of him and then another buck is right on his tail following him. I snuck over behind a woodpile and watched these 2 bucks feed together only 45 yards away. I believe one is the 6 point from the trail cam pics post and another wider buck but not sure if it was the guy above. Saw a nice doe and fawn come down too. I'll have to check the trail cam tomorrow. I didn't see the flash go off and it was just before 7pm so I hope I did get a few pics. Love to see what is walking by with only 2 weeks left until the season. Oh and I don't have to work that Saturday, yippee!!

Thanks all - I am ready, now all the deer have to do is cooperate. I love the cam because it does the scouting for you but I would rather be out there scouting. Hope all goes well for all this season.

OPENING DAY !!!!!
What a beautiful morning it was. I barely slept last night as I was anxious to get out there. Woke at around 5:40am and was groggy so I took the scent free shower. Usually I just roll out of bed and get dressed but couldnt quite get moving until after the shower.
It was crispy and when I made it to the field edge around 6:20am I could see the entire field was white, and no deer in it so I scrambled straight to the stand. I hooked my bow up and made the short climb. I pulled my bow up and then hung it and pulled my release out of my pocket. I no sooner got the velcro undone and I hear the leaves going crunchity crunch crunch. Thank goodness the field was white so I could make out the small bodied deer in the dark. Then another. Oh and then the bigger one. It was momma and the twins and she also had a doe from last year tagging along.
It was funny because the flash from my trail cam kept going off and blinding me until it got light enough for no flash. Those 2 little skippers fed under, in front of me, behind me, and on both sodes of me for 2 hours. The older 2 hung back in the woods just out of sight but I could hear them in the leaves. I only lost sight of them for approx. 15 minutes in those 2 hours. It was great to be that close and just watch but no veal for me this morning. I ended up leaving around 10:15am. Had some errands to run to make the family happy for a few hours.
Got back in the stand wayyyyyy to early. Was there by 2:30pm. That nice warm sun made me sleepy as all get up but I never did nap. Was too busy scanning the woods. Just at dusk, 6:30 exactly momma doe and one little one appeared about 25 yards away in the thick stuff. I watched as they were headed my way but decided to get down quickly as not to bump them too badly as it was too dark to see if anything else came in. I tried to make it sound like I was one of them in the leaves but they bolted a short distance and stopped. Guess I didnt scare em too bad. Had a great day. 8 hours on stand and 6 deer sighted.

Went to bed early Saturday night as I was quite tired. All that fresh air took its toll on me for sure. I was so tired I decided to skip the morning hunt on Sunday. Well, I spoke to my FIL (father in law)and he said there was a 6 or 8 pt feeding with the does around 7am. It wasnt the big guy so I think it was one of the other smaller 6pts. Felt good to sleep in for a change.
I had to get ym Dad around 9am as we were going to our gun camp down outside of Hanthingy, NY in a little town called Lordville. My FIL is headed to Colorado this year hunting so this was our only wekend to get the chores done. We had a tree down across the road so we cut that up and split it and had approx 2 face cord of firewood for this year. Also weedwhacked the tall grass and swept out the cabin. Spent about 2.5 hours doing chores and then hit the diner for lunch before going home. Was a great day spent with my Dad, FIL and BIL.
Missed the evening hunt as my wife works nights and had to nap. Won't be too many posts for the nights of Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday as she works those days. My hunting days will be Wednesdays, Thursday evenings if work allows, Friday evenings, Saturday evenings, and Sunday mornings.

10-22-08 - Wednesday
Normally I have Wednesdays off but not this week. We started Inventory at the warehouse today so it's a mandatory 6 day work week. I was there at 6:30am this morning and decided to quit for today at 4pm. I called my wife at 4:16pm and she said "I suppose you are going hunting" to which my reply was "If thats ok with you dear". So Im speeding down the highway (70mph) to get to my treestand. I get dressed from the trunk of the car and Im in my stand by 4:35pm. I saw 3 doe feeding in a backyard on my way up the hill so things looked promising.
I was on stand for 20 to 25 minutes when someone decided they wanted to target practice with their .22. I was less than pleased as they were approx only 200 yards away. I figured they would quit early and things would settle down nicely. 10 shots rang out the first time, followed by 15 minutes of silence. Then another 5 to 10 shots. another half hour goes by and then 2 shots, then another 5 to 10 shots. They finally ended after about an hour and 10 minutes. The wind was dying down so again my anticipation was getting high that I would see something.
I hear the leaves moving behind me so I look and here comes a black cat from back in the deep woods. Surely it was a sign that things were only going to get worse. Yup, they did. The neighbors dog ran off and the owner starts screaming and the dog runs back in the woods behind my stand about 60 yards away. I kept my composure and packed it in for the night. It was 6:15 when I climbed down.
Checked the trailcam on the way out but didnt have my spare card with me. I'll change it out next time I go up but I have 126 pics on there since 3pm Saturday when I changed it out. Not too bad for activity.
Hopefully the neighbors will decide its not nice out soon and stay indoors but thats what happens when you hunt a small rural parcel of land.

Lol Burt - Yeah I think I'll pass. I'll satisfy my bloodlust on a doe or a squirrel if things don't pan out. I'm hoping to be out at a decent time again today - Inventory is moving right along this morning. Maybe, just maybe I will get some peace and quiet out there tonight.

10-23-08 Thursday Worked til just before 5pm today. Driving home I made the call and gained permission to go out. In the stand by 5:15ish. Really quiet, no wind at all, sun was bright back into the woods in the direction the deer would be coming from so it would be in their eyes. The set up was too perfect. 5:40ish and my pocket is buzzing, d**n phone. I made the mistake of answering it. Long story short, had to get down and get home to watch the kids as there was business my wife needed to go take care of. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day. Btw - Checked the cam and pulled the card. 159 pics on it. Deer came down 17 minutes after I left last night. Thats 33 pics in under 24hours, but all of the movement is after dark and before light. NO DAYTIME PICS NOW ( Also it seems the bachelor groups have disbanded as I only had single buck pics instead of the usual 2 to 3 at a time. Monster made another appearance as well in the 9pm range. I almost hate that camera at times because it gives me too much information on what I am missing but on the other hand I love it to see what they are doing and at what times in helping me try to pattern them. Catch 22 I guess.
