Ah yes, the rutting moon will turn any savvy hunter into a bumbling idiot, beware of the rutting moon!lol ;D One of my favorite days to bow hunt is the Friday before gun season. Deer are going nuts and people are pushing them around scouting the woods. I stay on stand most of the day.

Well it's almost zero hour so here is the plan: Leaving tomorrow around 3 in the afternoon. Make camp by 9. I am traveling with my father in-law and brother who hasn't hunted since 95, I finally was able or should I say his boss (wife) finally gave the ok to go. I will bow hunt most of the day and he is going to be on the video-should be a blast! My brother in-law and nephew will make camp by noon. We have 4 guys to cover the 56 acres. Weather says for spotty showers Sat and snow showers for Sun. Will break camp Sunday night. Good luck to everyone, Bag a big one!!! most of all be safe!!!!

Well I'm back 12 hrs early. I just ate the most delicious venison tender loin from a young doe. My brother got her at 1 on Sat in all that rain. Not many deer taken by me, on the way home only saw a 10 pt, 8pt and one doe. Probably the worst opening day in a long time. What did happen was unreal. My corn field was to be cut last week but the field got too wet and it will now be up for a few more weeks or even to the spring. The bears are tearing up the place and the deer have a great place to hide. Well it is about 4:30 Sat afternoon and my brother is about 100 yards from me posted in a shooting box on the edge of the corn. I start hearing him yell "good bear" "go away bear" over and over again. I get up and walk towards him and I yell "Jeff how many bear" He says three a mother and two cubs! Trouble!!! This is the mother who had 4 cubs three black and one blond. She now has the blond and one black left. One cub was shot by a bow hunter and one was hit by a car. Well I now can see the bear in front of him. One cub was close to me about 30 yards the mother was in between. I started yelling and the didn't move an inch. The cub by me stood up and was about 4 ft tall all black, white running down the chest. I shoot my gun in the air and the bears slowly move into the corn. These guys are getting way to used to humans and may cause a problem in the future. This was a really cool experience but I would not want to surprise the mother out in the woods, she has to be 300 lbs, short legs and such a round body. The season opens next Sat and I know some of the guys in the area will shoot them, which I have mixed feelings about. Other than that it was a slow weekend of hunting. Whew!

TAKEN FROM DEC WEB SITE ;Resident and Nonresident hunters may take one bear by gun or bow each license year.
In the Southern Zone, you may not shoot a cub or a bear that should be known to be a cub, shoot any bear from a group of bears, or shoot or take a bear from its den.
